Über den Einfluss des (globalisierten) Kunstmarktes auf die künstlerische Produktion und Identität von Künstlern und Institutionen heute. Der Kunstmarkt erlebte in den letzten Jahren einen enormen Aufschwung, und die Preise für zeitgenössische Kunst stiegen in astronomische Höhen. Noch nie wurde im zeitgenössischen Bereich so viel Geld umgesetzt wie heute. Kurz vor der Eröffnung der ART Basel diskutieren wir über die Folgen dieser Entwicklung auf Künstlerkarrieren und die Rolle der Institutionen.
On the influence of the (globalised) art market, the artistic production and the identity of artists and public institutions today. The art market has increasingly gained importance in the last years and prices for contemporary art works reached astronomical heights. Never has so much money been involved in contemporary art as now. Shortly before ART Basel we discuss the consequences of this development on artists’ careers and the role of public institutions.

Gerald Raunig, philosopher and art theoretician, working at the eipcp (European Institute for Progressive Cultural Policies), and living in Vienna presented the lecture in the Kabinett of the Kunsthaus.

In seinem neuen Buch “Tausend Maschinen” unternimmt der Wiener Philosoph Gerald Raunig eine differenzierende Würdigung und Weiterentwicklung des Begriffs der Maschine, wie er von den französischen Philosophen Félix Guattari und Gilles Deleuze vorgeschlagen wird: die Maschine nicht mehr als technische Anlage, sondern als soziale Zusammensetzung und Verkettung. Als Gefüge von technischen, körperlichen, intellektuellen und sozialen Komponenten unterwandert dieser Maschinenbegriff die Oppositionen von Mensch und Maschine, von Organismus und Mechanismus. Raunigs “kleine Philosophie der Maschine” schließt mit einem begrifflichen Vorschlag, der sich gegen die schließende Identität der Gemeinschaft ebenso setzt wie gegen die rasternde Qualität der Staatsapparate: die abstrakte Maschine als Möglichkeitsmaschine, als monströses Vermögen und Vergnügen, als a-harmonische Komposition ohne KomponistIn.
Philosoph und Kunsttheoretiker, lebt in Wien; arbeitet am eipcp (European Institute for Progressive Cultural Policies) als Koordinator der transnationalen Forschungsprojekte republicart (2002-2005) und transform (2005-2008); Universitätsdozent am Institut für Philosophie der Universität Klagenfurt/A; (Mit-)Herausgeber der Buchreihen “republicart. Kunst und Öffentlichkeit” und “es kommt darauf an. Dr. Christine Abbt presented a talk titled “Verkörperungen des Grauens/Embodiments of the horror”. The lecture which took place in Abbt & Bauer’s collaboration in the Kabinett ended in a discussion with the artist Marc Bauer, Dr. Christine Abbt and the audience, moderated by Mirjam Varadinis.

Verkörperungen des Grauens/ Embodiments of the horror
Ausgehend von Ovids Metamorphosendichtung geht Christine Abbt verschiedenen Verwandlungen in Literatur und Philosophie nach, in denen Angst eine zentrale Rolle spielt und politische Konsequenzen hat. Das im Referat thematisierte Verhältnis von Angst, Verwandlung und Politik greift Aspekte und Motive auf, die auch im Raum durch die Ausstellung sichtbar werden.
Im Anschluss: Diskussion zwischen dem Künstler Marc Bauer und Christine Abbt, die für die Präsentation im Kabinett eng zusammengearbeitet haben.
Das Referat ist in deutscher Sprache, die Diskussion in Englisch.
